Project Summary
Kyoto Protocol imposes, worldwide, decreasing of greenhouse gases emissions from all sectors of activity. From these gases, CO2 represents the main component (about 75%), priority object being its decreasing.
The cement industry is responsible for 2% from worldwide energy consumption and 5% from global emissions of CO2 resulted from human activities (1,5Gt CO2). Emissions of CO2 result, mainly, from manufacturing the clinker of Portland cement (an intermediary product in cement manufacturing): about 50 – 60% from calcareous component decomposition and 30 – 40% from fuel burning. Any decrease of necessary energy has benefic influence both on cement plant viability, and on environment.
The approaches which has as purpose decreasing of energetic consumptions and of CO2 emissions at manufacturing the clinker of Portland cement are especially directed to improvement of installations efficiency in order to diminish the heat losses and to fossil fuels substitution with alternative fuels of type waste oils, wasted tires, etc., existing a few information regarding replacement of traditional raw materials (the limestone and the clay/marl) with other materials which contain CaO in a non-carbonated form, SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3.
ECO-CLINKER project is focus on and approaches aspects subject to the effect of using some mineralizator substances (from the class of oxides, fluorides, or mixed combinations) and of some non-carbonated raw materials (sub-products of type non-granulated blast furnace slag and steel slag or fly ash) for decreasing the energetic consumptions and CO2 emissions.
Project scope is to assess the impact provoked by using of non-carbonated materials and of mineralizators both on forming the minerals from clinker composition (its reactivity) and the properties of Portland cement, but also on environment, CO2 emissions and energetic consumptions.
The project has as main purpose performing of a Portland cement clinker which lead to decreasing of negative impact on environment, through diminishing the energetic consumptions and of CO2 emissions and durable administration of natural and artificial resources. Technical solutions will be approached in order to perform the clinker and will be based on:
- using some mineralizators/fusing agents which have to reduce clinker burning temperature of the raw materials mix (thermal energy consumption), thus also reducing the quantity of fuel necessary to perform raw mix burning and implicitly of CO2 emissions;
- using of some artificial materials which contain CaO in a non-carbonated form, which substitute partially calcareous component, thus reducing the quantity of CO2 emissions resulted from decarbonation of the limestone and wastes rich in SiO2 and Al2O3 which to substitute partially or total the silica-aluminous component from the raw mix (of type non-granulated blast furnace slag and steel slag or fly ashes);
- combined using of the wastes with high content of CaO, SiO2 and Al2O3 and of mineralizators.
- Phase I – Study regarding the possibilities of diminishing the energetic consumptions and of CO2 emissions at clinker manufacturing (December 2007)
- Phase II – Technology of laboratory for performing the clinkers with low temperature (June 2008)
- Phase III – Assessment of using the mineralizators on the microstructure of clinker and Portland cement (January 2009)
- Phase IV – Characterization of raw materials and dosages of raw mixes in order to perform clinkers with low content of heat and CO2 emissions (30 November 2009)
- Phase V – Laboratory technology in order to perform the clinkers with low consumption of heat and low CO2 emissions. Assessment of using the non-carbonated wastes on the microstructure of clinker and Portland cement with low consumption of heat and low CO2 emissions (15 September 2010)
